mixd.tv is a video discovery platform for Mac/PC and Linux machines.
It provides users a one stop solution for finding video from their favorite sources and a way of consuming that content on the go.
mixd.tv is a product that is currently in private beta. For those who want to try it, you can sign up to give it a try on our homepage. As we allow more people into the Beta, we will send you a mail with a link to download the latest client from our download page.
mixd.tv is an open platform and is working with the people who provide the content to our users, so that all parties are happy with the platform. mixd.tv is still in private beta and we working on making sure that agreements are in place for a public release. For anyone who has any reservations about the way we use their content, they are invited to get in touch on our website, so that we can find a way to work further with them.
If your mixd.tv app is not starting up, it could be because you were an early beta tester with an older database. Go to your systems videos folder and delete the mixdtv folder – this will cause local files to be removed, however, your app will synchronise all subscriptions and public playlists, so that they are present in your library as previously.
Also, mixd.tv does not currently work behind a firewall, this could be your problem – we are updating this soon!
Please report any strange behaviour back to us. However, if you feel that the behaviour you are seeing is non reproducible and you don't mind removing all saved videos, then you can uninstall the application. When you are asked to remove videos - answer "Yes". Finally, reinstall the app from our website, login and all your public and followed playlists will be synchronized back. This way you get a clean installation again. If you are still observing strange behaviour, please mention that you have reinstalled the application in your report.
Note: Linux and Mac users need to remove the mixd.tv folder manually from their movies/videos folder.
Videos are downloaded to your video library (this is found in the left side panel). Removing videos from the library will force the software to delete any files that have been downloaded.
The mixd.tv app runs in the system background to inform you of new videos in your playlist subscriptions. To prevent that you can remove it from the "Autostart Folder" in the Windows start menu. Click Start->Programms->AutoRun and right click on "mixd.tv". Then select delete.
The mixd.tv app currently plays the best video quality available. This behavior is not configurable by the user, though it may become a feature of the app in the future! However on Vimeo we are compromising to lower quality to speed up downloading for now.
There are multiple reasons why some videos may not be playing back:
- There is no connection to stream the video (error shown)
- The video is no longer available on the site that had hosted it (error shown)
- One of our access protocols cannot be used on your system/network (the mixd.tv app is using different ways to access videos via HTTP, MMS, BitTorrent, etc. If one of those is not working in your environment other videos may still work).
mixd.tv allows users to discover content via a 3 means:
- Search box: users can enter whatever search term that they want.
- Source browsing: users can browse through a source tree and find subscribable channels of content. Channels represent a source of content that is regularly updated, subscribers are notified of the updates in digests each time they login.
- Playlists: User created lists of video that can be searched for from the search box and subscribed to. Playlists can be anything from a list of someone’s favorite music videos, to a list of educational videos about a certain topic, to a list of things that just catch your eye.
There is a known issue in the software that we are looking to fix in the next release. The issue can be fixed by restarting the application.
The mixd.tv app is special in that it acts very much like a browser for video. This has the advantage of putting you in charge of what you search for (which sources you use), making search a customised experience and making sure that you are doing nothing more than accessing content that would be freely available on the web. It does however, cost a little time, the performance of your computer can make a difference as can the quality of the equipment used by websites to provide their video streams.
